I need to vent

Please feel free to skip this post. It isn't what my regular reader would expect.

So, I wrote a book. Many people would consider this an amazing accomplishment in and of itself. I guess I should be satisfied with the fact that I wrote it. But it sits in my computer, and calls to me. I couldn't just be satisfied with one book either. So, I am writing a sequel. You see, writing to me is not an option, it is a necessity. Some people need chocolate, some people need to run (and frankly, they are sick), whatever, I need to write. If I go long periods of time without writing, I get very restless and I start to annoy myself.

Any way, I also read- A LOT- probably an unhealthy amount. I have read a lot of good books and I have read some ok books, but lately it seems like they will publish almost anything. I know, I know, a lot of people LOVE the Twilight series, but I think she isn't that great of a writer. (I say she has good ideas, but someone else should actually do the writing). She writes for people who don't read much or something. She drives me crazy!! I think I am a better writer. So, I set out to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and start looking for an agent...

You can have my book! Read it! Sell it! Burn it! Whatever! I don't want it! Getting published is the most frustrating, annoying, self-esteem damaging, hideously impossible thing that ever existed!

What good is a book, then?

The hardest part for me is I believe we are all meant to do something. We all have some talent that we are meant to share with the world. I just thought that writing was mine. So, how do I share it?

You ask your husband to use his 133t skills to make a PDF of your book and you can give it to people that way via email.

So where is it?

I'm so sorry. I think getting published is such a ridiculous process.

You could post it on the blog, bit by bit. :)

I have no idea what you've done so far, but I have a few suggestions. First, take your book to writers' conferences. They're a good way to get feedback and to have a community of people who share your desires and experiences. Second, keep trying. That's just that. Third, have you had a serious editor look it over? Not only can an editor help you with clean text, but he or she will usually be able to help with more substantive issues. You're likely to have done all of these things, in which case I have only this to say: I think anyone will agree that getting published is never as easy as the crapload of awful books out there would lead you to believe.

I'm working on the seeds of my first real story. Maybe when I get back to Provo we can help each other out. I also know a few other aspiring writers who might enjoy extra company, especially from someone who has a full manuscript. That is quite an accomplishment.

I haven't had any editors look at it, but I don't happen to know any...
