The Birthday Party

I know, I am slow. But here it is.

Close ups on the cake.

It is actually just from Smith's
which is pretty amazing.

The numbers, smokestack, wheels and such
are plastic (I have them if anyone feels brave enough
to try making it). The bottom is sheet cake,
and the other is a squarish cake.
Black frosting is dangerous stuff though. It colors everything.

So, I was just thinking. James has never actually eaten
his cake on his birthday. His first birthday he had the
stomach flu, so he had to wait a couple of days.
On his second birthday, he was too busy playing
basketball, and on this birthday, he was too busy
with his trains and all of his guests.

All James wanted for his birthday
was a magnetic Thomas to go on
his track. Mostly what he got was
clothes. I was excited. He wasn't.
Every time he opened something
he would say, "Do you think this
is a Thomas?" He ended up getting
two Thomas trains and two Percy
trains, of different sizes. He calls
them big Thomas and Percy
and baby Thomas and Percy.

He also got a train table which I
thought was going to be wonderful
because I thought it might contain
the train mess...

It didn't.

This is my favorite picture.
Halfway through his party,
he decided he needed a break.
He asked for apple juice, and I
thought he would find a lap to sit in while
he drank it. Instead he disappeared alone
to the living room where he
sat and drank it. Too much excitement,
I guess.

So cute! Jonathan gets that way too--he doesn't like having too many people around. Needs a breather once in a while.

What a fun birthday. Isn't it funny that half the time we buy toys and kids don't use them as they are intended. Creative. Very creative.
