I got the rejection email today:
Dear Brooke,
Thank you for submitting your work, Soul Mates. After careful consideration, we have decided not to publish your manuscript at this time. Please be aware that we offer to publish less than ten percent of the manuscripts we review, and although we did not offer to publish your manuscript, we encourage you in your endeavors to get it published. We think you are a talented writer; your manuscript passed through many reviewers who concluded that your writing needs a little polishing but has great potential. We hope that you will continue to pursue getting this published because we think you could be successful and we wish you the best along the way.
Again, thank you for sending us your manuscript. Please feel free to submit any other suitable manuscripts you might have in the future.
Some things I don't understand:
We encourage you to get it published- just not with us ?
We think you can be successful- just not with us ?
So there is that. Don't worry, I am not giving up. It is just discouraging, you know.
PS. Melanie the second one is done. Not that it does anybody any good, huh?

Sorry Brooke. :( I think it's pretty encouraging though that they say they had many reviewers look over it. I'm still reading it! Sorry I missed our book club for your book.
me too. everything that liz said.
Agreed! Not getting an INSTANT rejection letter is progress. =) I say read it again, see if you can find some areas to "polish" and venture forth again.
Well, let's just "polish" it and send it out some more! It still is encouraging. It was a nicer let down probably than most....and it didn't get axed right away...that's something. It sounds like it made it through the first round of auditions and they actually considered it! Yeah!
Oh, lame! But I'm glad to hear that you're not giving up. Try, try again, I guess! :)
What a bummer! I know you won't give up, though. You know every famous author has some story about being rejected by dozens before making their fortune! :)
My writing professors (who are now colleagues in my writers group) have always told me: submitting for publication is really a numbers game. You have to send out a very high volume of submissions before you might get one acceptance. I keep all my rejection slips (12/12) almost like a badge of honor -- I'm paying my dues! ;)
Are you in a writer's group? If not, get into one! They help a lot.
Can I read your finished 2nd one? Sorry to see Soul Mates didn't make it yet. I review for Covenant and they're seriously cutting back on the number of books they'll even review much less publish. See if the company will give you your manuscript reviews. Sometimes they'll only agree to if you commit to submitting the polished copy back to them if you use their ideas (if they still don't want it you can send it elsewhere) At least this is what Covenant does. Good luck- I'm looking forward to seeing your name on many books:)
